Rotation Reflection

My family medicine rotation allowed me to gain valuable experience in managing a wide variety of patients across all age groups in an outpatient setting. Throughout this rotation, I developed skills in preventative care, chronic disease management, and patient education. I was able to see patients with conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, hyperlipidemia, upper respiratory infections, and musculoskeletal complaints, which helped me build a strong foundation in primary care.

Something new that I was exposed to during this rotation was the emphasis on continuity of care and preventative medicine. Unlike my previous experiences, I was able to follow up with patients over time and see how management plans impacted their health outcomes. I learned the importance of routine screenings, vaccinations, and counseling patients on lifestyle modifications such as diet, exercise, and smoking cessation. These experiences reinforced how primary care plays a crucial role in preventing disease and promoting long-term health.

This rotation also helped me improve my ability to develop comprehensive yet practical treatment plans. In family medicine, patients often present with multiple chronic conditions, requiring me to address several issues within a single visit. Initially, I found it challenging to prioritize concerns and manage the time I had effectively. However, with guidance from my preceptor, I learned how to focus on the most important issues while still addressing preventative care and patient concerns. I also had the opportunity to present patients regularly, which strengthened my ability to communicate relevant information and propose appropriate management plans. Over time, I became more confident in making clinical decisions and tailoring treatment plans to each patient’s individual needs.

Another important aspect of this rotation was improving my physical exam skills and patient interaction. I performed comprehensive physical exams and became more comfortable conducting focused exams based on the patient’s presenting complaints. I was also able to perform several procedures, including venipunctures daily, along with intramuscular injections, EKGs, pelvis exams, and even spirometry.

Overall, this rotation was a very rewarding experience that significantly strengthened my clinical skills and confidence in an outpatient primary care setting. Family medicine allowed me to develop a more holistic approach to patient care by focusing on prevention, education, and long-term management. I gained experience in managing both acute and chronic conditions while improving my clinical reasoning, patient communication, and organizational skills. I believe this rotation has prepared me well for future rotations and my role as a future PA.
